browns QB
so, we now know the answer to the QB question. holcomb wins out. in my opinion, i'm glad. couch hasn't lived up to his potential & is not worth the money. he's a good quarterback, but if your back up is as good or better, why pay couch's salary?

i think the real question for the browns is who to bench once courtney brown decides he is ready to play again, mark word or kenard lang? i say keep courtney on the bench. word does an outstanding job on the field & lang is really starting to come into his own. how could you justify benching one of them for a guy who has lost an entire season in his 3 seasons in the league?

we have lights...we have lights...
THE BIG BLACK of 2003 is over(and i'm not talking about ruben studdard of american idol fame, as his career never began). seems the problem may have started in eastlake. the boil alert is over although we here in the eastern burbs never had to worry. apparently, the experts are saying that lake erie is still 'unsafe' to swim. is that really any new news there? maybe it's me since i'm not from here, but hasn't the lake always been a premeditated gamble? i've been in it once & itched for a week...literally, a week.

did anyone catch the mayor of toronto(crazy hair & all) at a press conference about the big black? he was addressing the flying accusations early on between canada & the u.s. & stated, 'have you ever seen the united states take the blame for anything?' interesting question. have we ever taken the blame for any international problems? can anyone name just one?

we as a nation are opposed to the actions of saddam hussein & osama bin laden, but we put saddam in power during the iran/iraq war & we armed osama & his group against the soviet union in their effort against afghanistan. don't see to many people bringing that up now. by the way, since we abandoned the afghan people after the soviet pullout, the country was thrust into chaos which was squashed by the taliban when they took power.

anyone out there support those third world sweat shops? of course not. by the way, love those new nikes. let's face it, it's our blatant commercialism that spawned those sweat shops. no matter how much our conscience tugs at our heartstrings, it will never tug enough at our shoestrings or zippers to trade low prices for morality.

reality tv(my current addiction) started in britain. not our fault.

seriously, can anyone think of something we willingly or begrudgingly admit is our fault?

eerie on lake erie

check out this photo of cleveland yesterday evening courtesy of AP. rather spooky to see no lights except for the emergency lights in the federal building. i did hear a rumor that the browns stadium was going full power w/generators. at least we have our priorities straight.

finger pointing
i knew this would happen. it's canada's fault. it's new york's fault. then it was a power plant in pennsylvannia. now, the blame is beginning to shift here to the good old ohio north coast. seems all evidence may now be pointing here as the source of the problem. damn. and just when we were getting over the stigma of the burning river.

millions w/o power? time to turn up the hearing aid tom ridge...
w/the blackout slowly becoming history, it is interesting to note that the office of homeland security is leading their website w/a story about the internet worm. there is no mention of this anywhere on their site. curious. thanks to the command post for pointing this out.

blogging by candlelight...
well, here i am in the middle of the dark, only the glow of my laptop screen & a few candles illuminating my desk. the radio is spewing what sounds like a direct feed from fox news. people pointing fingers at each other. they are saying some parts of ohio could be w/o power for two days. we'll see about that. apparently, i can't drink any water or shower. i am going to be one stubbly fellow by the morning. all i have left to drink is a 6 pack of rolling rock & 1 fuzzy navel wine cooler. there were two, but i was thirsty. not bad stuff. little sweet.

the sky outside is beautiful. you can actually see the stars. reminds me of my youth on monte sano mountain. i had forgotten how beautiful a clear night sky could be. i saw the big dipper for the first time in years tonight.

it has been a very relaxing & quiet night. i am actually enjoying it. i know i am going to hear a lot of bitchin' tomorrow at work when/if the power comes on. i am guessing not everyone else is enjoying this as much as i am.

what did you do during the blackout? please keep any of those intimate stories that may result in blackout babies 9 months from now to yourself.

by the way, just want to point out that cleveland.com is currently down, but good old bald rhetoric is up & running w/updated content.

blogger block
karen cut out this past sunday's doonesbury from the PD for me. today i found it online & thought i would share it. this pretty much sums up my lack of posts recently. i just haven't been able to come up w/anything. california governor's race? too annoying to go into any further. dubya's on vacation so that removes a big source of rhetoric for me. i could go on & on about howard dean & how he needs to be president, but i will be getting into that later when people are actually ready to hear about the 2004 election.

no, i can't seem to get it together. not for the blog. not to get back in the gym after a 2 to 3 week layoff. nothing. i need some motivation. anyone have any words of wisdom?

men do the laundry month?
for my third consecutive post for the evening, i am hear on the local nightly news that cleveland mayor jane campbell has declared august as 'men do laundry' month. keep in mind, i hear this as i am getting up to put the final load of my family's laundry in the dryer. why is it that men are always stereotyped as inadequate in regards to domestic duties? how about 'women mow the lawn' month? by the way jane, don't you have more important things to worry about? say, the proposed new convention center? i'm sure chas rich could jog your memory if you've forgotten.

i'm a celebrity, elect me...
is it just me, or is the california recall election beginning to look like a collection of the rejects from this past season reality flop 'i'm a celebrity, get me out of here'? the terminator, gary coleman, gallagher, larry flynt. these are now all official candidates on the california gubanatorial ballot. the scary part is that T1000 will probably win. now the poor citizens of california will have to see more of the skeletoresque maria shriver schwarzenegger.

jlo overflow
hey, a non-political post. just caught a snippet about jennifer lopez possibly hosting her own talk show. just sit & ponder that for a minute. and i didn't think it could get worse than ricki lake. i used to find jlo very appealing. first, she was a fly girl on in living color. she's a good dancer. then she became an actress. not that great, but nice to look at. then there was the release of her first CD. again, not much talent, but nice CD eye candy. clothing line. perfume. puff daddy. jewelry. i'm just waiting for the jlo bobblebooty doll. she's like one of her songs that top 4o radio plays into the ground. let's hope that gigli is the beginning of the end. especially now that she is paired w/the ultimate evil, ben affleck.

if gray davis goes, so should taft...
so, being from alabama, i've seen some pretty awful governors in my short 30 yrs on this planet. does the name george wallace ring any bells? you remember the guy w/the slicked back hair standing in front of the university of alabama refusing to let in two minority students. then there was fob james. fob. a governor named after the metal chain on a pocketwatch. during his second non-consecutive seat in the office he reinstituted the chain gang. keep in mind, his second term was in the 1990s!!! there were other incompetents sprinkled in there as well. the result of poor leadership is a state that ranks last or near the bottom in education, health care, economic issues, you name it. ever heard of the word proration? it's a very popular word in alabama in regards to education. proration basically was/is the reduction of the education budget yearly. this results in low paid teachers, shoddy facilities, an overall subpar education. it even follows into the state universities. i matriculated(i love that word) through the university of alabama system. in my sophomore year i had a 3.75 GPA & lost my scholarship due to proration. a 3.75!! the only thing that kept me out of the clocktower were the people who lost their rides w/a 4.0. now that would suck.

my point in all this is that i see a lot of the same conditions developing in ohio since i've moved here. the education system is going downhill fast. companies are leaving en mass & taking their higher paying jobs w/them. the youth are following the companies right out of here too. ohio is going to have nothing to grow on in the future. taxes are going up, something i usually don't bitch about because we as americans pay one of the lowest overall tax bills in the world. however, where is the money going? the roads are crap. budgets in all sectors are getting slashed. people are losing their jobs. hell, ohio has a lottery to supposedly help fund the schools. that's something alabama doesn't & probably never will. where is that windfall?

i have a lot of questions since i don't know the political climate of ohio as well. it seems to me that ohio missed a grand opprotunity to get rid of taft last year, but failed. the poor democratic party in ohio didn't even have enough money to run a decent media campaign for tim hagen who lost. he went down telling everyone that taft would raise taxes & the state would be hard pressed to balance the budget. taft just denied it...all the way up to the day after the election where he lowered the boom. now taft's approval rating is down to a miserable 40%. that's only a little better than gray davis in california & they are having a recall vote to get another person in office. i don't necessarily agree w/that action & i wouldn't want to see it here, but why hasn't it been mentioned? if davis deserves to go, so does taft. i suspect the weak democratic party of the state can't muster the effort & the ohio republicans, even though they don't like taft either, don't want to open up that barrel of monkey's this close to a presidential election. ohio is an important state for old dubya(you knew i'd work him in). oh, don't forget, jerry springer may be our next senator. the alabama political climates not looking that bad now.

1AM...alarm going off go to bed...
ok, i think i finally got this commenting program working on my server. found that the cgiComments code i was using was written before blogger went to the new version. apparently the blogitemnumber is two digits longer now. so, i adjusted the code accordingly. i lost all comments left previously. that sucks. it won't give counts on older blogs either, but will for all upcoming new ones. of course, after all this, i might end up eliminating the counting of the comments just because it may slow the page down. if anyone experiences slow loading time over the next few weeks, please let me know & i will figure out what to do then.

when you fear it, outlaw it...
i know i am probably late writing on this subject, but i've been out of the blog for a coupla days. first this week, i see blurbs on dubya claiming he is against gay marriage. not only that, he is sicking the federal lawyers on finding a way to make it illegal to marry someone of the same gender. illegal to marry?! WTF?! apparently they are considering putting a constitutional amendment up for ratification to officially define marriage in this land of 'freedom' as a union between a man & a woman. what kind of sanctimonious rhetoric is this? did dubya remember that his best pal dick cheney's daughter is a lesbian? in fact, dick as recently as last year, defended the rights of gays to marry. is this going to fall under the office of homeland security? will gay couples in hawaii & vermont find tom ridge & john ashcroft at their front door demanding their blenders & toasters be returned since their union is illegal?

on top of this, my favorite group of sanctimonious leaders, the catholic church, has issued a report urging catholic & non-catholic politicians alike to do all they can to create laws to ban homosexual marriage. first off JP, in this country, we separate church & state. while your little country & funny dressed military men may be based on religion, we chose to keep it out of decisions because our country has a plethora of religions represented by our government. the vatican goes on to say that adoption by gay couples is a form of violence against the adoptive children because they grow up in an environment that does not allow the to grow up well adjusted. again, i state WTF?! JP, in case you haven't noticed, over 50% of marriages in this country fail. how about doing something about that before forcing your opinion on couples who may actually make it! how about free counseling from your church for married couples, regardless of where they may be getting married? i married into a catholic family & had to take pre-cana. it was pretty much just a session to make sure you are both on the same plane of reality in terms of what marriage will do to your lives. it brings up a lot of interesting points. and if i remember correctly, the point was to make sure the marriage was based on love, communication & understanding. where are these qualities from the church for homosexuals?

i can't even tell you how much this pisses me off. i would just once like to hear one, solid, factoid about why gays should not marry or why it is immoral. i always hear that the bible says it is immoral. well, you know what? the bible was translated from hebrew into english. there is no straight translation between those two languages. i am guessing there was a lot of paraphrasing & injection of personal beliefs into what we read below. in fact, it has often been a contention of my own(i don't think i've ever heard anyone else say this before), but i believe the reason you find references against homosexuality in the bible is because of the romans. the romans persecuted the crap out of the christians. the roman army, w/their decade long tours of duty, were known as a haven of homosexuality. some of the greatest philosophers of our time were open about their homosexuality in roman times. think the early christians feelings toward the romans affected their outlook? think about it.

i could go on forever on this subject, but i have a feeling we will see this issue raising it's evil head a lot over the coming months.
